GHENT, N.Y. - Forty-seven dogs, four birds, and one cat have been removed from the home of an alleged animal hoarder by the Columbia-Greene Humane Society and SPCA investigators.
Investigators say the remote home, owned by 49-year-old Anderson DeSouza, was found in deplorable conditions, with the floor covered in animal feces and urine.
They say the adult dogs and puppies were found abandoned and left to die, covered with fleas and excrement.
"This place was among the worst living conditions I've ever seen animals survive in. We got there just in the nick of time," said Ron Perez, President/Investigator for CGHS/SPCA.
Among the breeds found were Cairn Terriers, Chihuahuas, Brussels Griffons, and Dachshunds.
All dogs and puppies will be put up for adoption immediately. Humane Society officials ask that if people are interested in adopting these dogs, to first submit an online application to be pre-approved on the Columbia-Greene Humane Society's
